Biopharma CMC Executive Search.
Retained, partner-led search for the leaders who make a therapy manufacturable: Chief Technical Officers, SVP and VP CMC, and the process development, analytical, drug product and regulatory CMC heads beneath them, calibrated to modality, stage and the next capital event.

CMC is where a therapy survives or stalls.
Sources: Phase 3 Search analysis of the FDA’s full published CRL archive, July 2026 (The Complete Response Letter Report; methodology); McCarthy & O’Boyle, Drug Discovery Today, 2026 (45% CMC, approved-after-CRL small-molecule NDAs).
For the CEO, the stake is runway: a manufacturing-driven Complete Response Letter sets a program back a median of 1.28 to 2.5 years (RSM US LLP; Therapeutic Innovation & Regulatory Science, 2026), refinanced on the worst terms a company will ever see. The same literature carries the other half of the story: CMC-cited CRLs are recoverable, with 75% later approved against 44.4% for safety-cited letters (McCarthy & O’Boyle, 2026). Recovery is a leadership outcome. It depends on whether the CMC seat was filled early enough, and by someone who had done it before. In the language of the CTO Mandate Framework, CMC carries the first three promises: Possible, Reproducible and Acquirable. We search against them.
The CMC organisation, seat by seat.
The job changes with modality and stage.
The same title hides three different jobs. We calibrate which one you are hiring, and whether a VP or a CTO is the right seat, before we open the market.
The first CMC leader
Process selection, the CDMO decision, a CMC plan the board can fund and an IND package that will not be the reason for a clinical hold. Often a VP with hands-on development depth rather than a commercial-scale operator. We advise when the full seat is premature, and what to hire instead.
The lock-and-scale leader
Process lock, comparability across changes, analytical method validation, PPQ readiness and a Module 3 written for the assessor rather than the team. The seat that decides whether the filing carries a manufacturing deficiency.
The commercial CMC leader
Pre-approval inspection, post-approval changes, second-source and lifecycle management, and the CMC voice in the boardroom when an acquirer runs diligence on the process. The operator who turns an approval into an asset.
CMC leadership placed where the filing is decided.
Placements and partnerships across Alnylam, BioMarin, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol Myers Squibb, Gilead, KBI Biopharma, Nitto Avecia, Spark Therapeutics and Vertex, spanning small molecule, biologic and advanced-modality CMC organisations on both the sponsor and CDMO side. Companies we have placed into have since exited for an aggregate of over $7.3Bn, and Phase 3-placed leaders have helped move 125+ assets toward launch.
“The best search experience I have had in my whole career. The successful candidate has been exceptional.”Tim Maines · CTO Quality, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals
Diagnostic first, then the market.
Every CMC search begins with the mandate read: which of the five mandates the next capital event actually demands, with particular weight on Possible, Reproducible and Acquirable, what the current organisation can already hold, and where the gap is structural rather than personal. Then a partner runs the market end to end, through the CMC, Technical Operations and Quality networks we have worked for 13 years, not a résumé database. You get a calibrated slate, a written read-back of what we heard, and a recommendation that may be “not search”.

CMC executive search, in plain terms.
What does CMC mean in biotech, and why does it drive executive hiring?
CMC stands for Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls: the process, analytics, formulation, supply and regulatory evidence that prove a therapy can be made the same way every time. It is the largest single category of FDA Complete Response Letter deficiency, so the CMC leader is the hire that most often decides whether an approval happens on schedule.
What is the difference between a VP of CMC and a Chief Technical Officer?
The VP of CMC runs the technical program: process and analytical development, drug product, tech transfer and the CMC sections of the filing. The CTO owns the whole technical enterprise and its interface with Quality, Regulatory and the board. Most companies combine the two until late Phase 2, then separate them. We search both seats and advise which one the next two years actually need.
When should a biotech hire its first CMC leader?
Before the process is locked, not after. For small molecules that is typically pre-IND to Phase 1; for biologics and advanced modalities it is earlier, because the process is the product. Hiring the seat late is the most common pattern we see behind a manufacturing-driven Complete Response Letter, and the one our diagnostic is built to catch.
How long does a CMC executive search take?
A typical engagement is completed within 90 days of the brief. The fastest we have placed a CTO is 21 days. Timelines vary with role seniority, scope and company stage; case studies are available on request.
Do you place CMC leaders for cell and gene therapy, mRNA and other advanced modalities?
Yes. Viral vector, cell therapy, oligonucleotide and mRNA programs carry the highest CMC risk in the industry, and a shallow pool of leaders who have taken them through comparability and PPQ. Those searches are a core part of the practice, alongside biologics and small molecules.
How does Phase 3 run a CMC search?
Diagnostic first. We read the company against the five mandates of the CTO Mandate Framework, agree with the board what the next capital event demands of the technical organisation, and only then build the market map. A partner runs the search end to end through the CMC, Technical Operations and Quality networks we have worked for 13 years, and the recommendation may be "not search".
CMC leadership, in depth.
When to hire which CMC seat, what CMC does to an exit multiple, and why the boardroom needs a CMC voice before the filing.
Run the diagnostic on your next hire.
Thirty minutes. A structured read on the role. We tell you whether search is the right product, whether the brief reflects the company you are actually inheriting, and whether the leadership architecture sits where it needs to be for your next capital event.
